Hello
Has anyone else spotted in the press that a private members' bill to
exempt MPs (and by implication parliament) from the Freedom of
Information Act has just passed its second reading in the Commons?
There was an article about it in The Guardian yesterday, see:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/guardianpolitics/story/0,,1997970,00.html
According to the article, the bill will protect all MPs' correspondence
from release to the press and the public and stops public authorities
even confirming or denying whether they have received a letter from an
MP.
I wondered if anyone had thoughts on the implications of this for
archives which hold papers of MPs, and on the operation of FOI
generally? In particular, could the TNA, the Parliamentary Archives or
the NCA comment and let us know whether any influence can be brought to
bear?
Many thanks,
Helen
