A statistician position is available within the
Department of HIV and Genitourinary Medicine, Division
of Immunology, Infection and Inflammatory Diseases,
based at the Denmark Hill campus. The successful
candidate will join an active and internationally
renowned team in HIV epidemiology and clinical
research and a major cross-campus HIV basic science
research group based in a 5* research division. The
department has a wide range of translational research
activities which include several large epidemiological
and clinical studies, as well as laboratory-based
studies on the pathogenesis of resistance to HIV, and
clinical trials on novel antiretroviral drugs and
prototype HIV vaccines. International activities
include a well-established clinical mentorship
programme supporting the antiretroviral roll-out
programme in KwaZulu-Natal, and a research programme
on HIV Immune Reconstitution syndrome based in Durban.
Applicants should possess an MSc and/or a PhD in
Medical Statistics, and have practical experience in
medical statistics and epidemiology. Previous HIV
research experience and publications, and expertise in
mathematical modelling would be an advantage.
Candidates should have excellent computer skills and
considerable experience in using statistical packages
such as STATA and database systems such as Microsoft
Access. They should have good communication skills,
possess initiative, and be able to work effectively as
part of a multidisciplinary team.
The postholder will be responsible for the statistical
analysis of data from epidemiological and clinical
studies in the department in the UK and
internationally. Key ongoing projects include an
Medical Research Council LIVITY study on HIV
transmission in the black Caribbean community in the
UK; a study on risk factors for HIV immune
reconstitution syndrome in south Africa and related
projects in Uganda; a pan-London research programme on
sexual assault; and the epidemiology of HIV
nephropathy in the era of highly active antiretroviral
therapy. They will also work closely with
statisticians at the MRC Clinical Trials Unit (HIV
Group) and at other London sites in the analysis of
data from a national cohort study and HIV drug
resistance database. The postholder will also be
encouraged to develop his/her own research interests,
and to lead on research publications.
Salary will be in the range of £25,083 pa to £38,068
(exclusive of £2323 pa London Allowance) depending on
age and experience. The postholder will be appointed
at the level of Lecturer or Research Fellow depending
on possession of a PhD, and publication record.
