Thankyou to Greta and everyone who replied to my Pre employment enquiry.
The process we are currently looking at implementing on 1st April 2007 has so far received positive feedback and encouragement by all those involved... early days so hoping all continues to go well.

However Bob there is evidence that, where there is no specific hazards requiring health supervision identified by the risk assessment, then pre-employment health assessment is not necessary other than 3 simple questions which can be asked of the employee by HR?Personnel:
a.. Do you need any special aids/adaptations to assist you at work, whether or not you have a disability?
b.. .Are you having, or waiting for, treatment or investigations of any kind at present?
c.. .Have you ever had any health problems which may have been caused or made worse by work?
-Answer YES to any one of the questions and the candidate must be referred to OH for assessment; -Answer NO to all questions and accept as fit for employment. »Hargreaves C, Screen Test, Occupational Health July 06 This was a small study undertaken with Royal Free and Sandwell NHS Trusts and a longer, larger study is ongoing. This method is also seen as satisfying legislation by the legal people as well as finding favour with a lot of OH people because it enables them to concentrate their time on the aspects of OH which are so easily overlooked when time is spent pouring over the unnecessary health declaration forms of healthy adults.

Sorry Michelle, I disagree with your comment " There is no value in
pre-employment health screening. " The evidence for PE screening shows
that it is valid and necessary to ensure that the pre-existing health status
of the individual will not be affected by the employment (eg asthma and
allergy to species of animals in animal workers). Also it is a useful tool
in identifying health problems that may be considered as needing 'reasonable
adjustment' under the DDA.
Quote:" the employment shall not adversely affect the workers health, and
the workers health shall be appropriate for the contracted employment."
Without a PE system in place an employer cannot discharge their 'duty of
care' and ensure that the individual is not placed at risk. A PE screening
questionnaire is a basic and fundamental part of the Risk Assessment
process.

Michelle,
I stopped doing the pre-employment health screening when I started here 5
years ago but didn't have any negative comments etc. There is no value in
pre-employment health screening. If a new employee will be requiring health
surveillance then I do a base line spirometry, audiometry, etc as
appropriate on their first day when I do the Occupational Health Induction.
New starters complete a basic confidential questionnaire which I use to
assess whether or not they require any adjustments to their workstation.

Hi All,
The department I am working in is currently in the process of changing the
pre employment health screening process. I would really appreciate
feedback from anyone on or off list who has experience both positive or
negative of implementing changes to their pre employment health screening
process.
Thankyou!
Michelle
