italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
UNIVERSITY OF WARWICK - DEPARTMENT OF ITALIAN
CALL FOR PAPERS
Colloquium: Mobility and Identity Formation The "Italian case"
Friday 15-Saturday 16 June 2007
Guest speakers include:
Prof Armando Gnisci (University of Rome 'La Sapienza')
Prof Joseph Pivato (Athabasca University)
Dr Susanna Scarparo (Monash University)
Prof Franca Sinopoli (University of Rome 'La Sapienza')
The colloquium will explore notions and representations of mobility emerging from the experience of migration between Italy and other countries (European and non-European) in the course of the 20th century and up to today. The focus will be on the specific impact of mobility on formulations of identity as represented in written and cinematic production, using the Italian experience and its particular complexity as a basic framework through which to examine and understand other, comparable situations. This interdisciplinary approach will allow the Italian case to illuminate other national and transnational contexts while also bringing findings in related fields to bear on the Italian case.
The colloquium is the final event in a series of workshops sponsored by the AHRC under its Diasporas, Migration and Identities programme which are being held in Warwick during the Academic Year 2006-07. The series is working to create a dynamic interchange of ideas and questions, whereby the Italian context is used as a filter through which to examine other, comparable contexts, which in turn will offer new perspectives on the specific issues of Italian migration and identities. The conference aims to draw together the intellectual strands which have emerged during this exploration, and to delineate a critical framework for the analysis of phenomena of mobility and identity in relation to the Italian context. Whilst papers are expected to give consideration to 'the Italian case', contributions are invited not only from researchers in the area of Italian Studies, but also from specialists in related fields such as Modern Languages, Film and Theatre Studies, Visual Arts, Sociology, History, Geography, Law, Politics.
Areas of particular interest include:
- concepts and practices of mobility;
- formulations, representations and interpretations of identity;
- the permeability and use of physical, social and cultural spaces;
- the formation of minority cultures and their impact on the mainstream;
- voice, language and authorship in relation to geographical and social mobility;
- intercultural dialogue and intercultural identities;
- the localization of critical discourses and analytical frameworks.
