AVG has a tendency in default install, to run an immediate full disc scan
whenever you startup a machine, look at the icons in the bottom right grey
bar of the screen if you see the avg checkerboard and a second similar
checkerboard with a white playing symbol in the centre then its doing a
background scan, this takes up huge amounts of processor time but a right
click on the icon will give you the option to stop it. It may solve you
problem, also agree with Laurie make sure _all_ Norton has gone as it and
its close relatives fight when associated with other similar products with
profound impact on machines performance.
