I can recommend the books on 'British Mining' from the Northern Mine
Research Society.
More specific: Memoirs 2000 and Memoirs 2001 and the R.A. Fairnbairn
editions (Weardale Lines, The Mines of Alston Moor, ...) are most
interesting.
