2nd Call for Papers
Papers or other contributions are invited for the following session:
“Giving back? Ideas for mutually beneficial research”
Sponsored by the Participatory Geographies Working Group (PYGYWG)
at the Royal Geographical Society/Institute of British Geographers
Annual Conference, London, August 28 – 31, 2007
This session is intended to share ideas about "giving back" to those
who contribute to our research. Much discussion to date has concerned
modifying the research itself (through increased participation, for
instance). This session is a forum to continue those discussions, and
also to consider the concept of "giving back" in a broader sense. For
instance, sometimes researchers can also give back through advocacy, or
proposal writing for projects, programmes, education, or even migration
or job applications. Some researchers "give back" through contacts,
language services, or technical/administrative skills…
How many of us (try to) fill roles other than solely "researcher"? Or
are the above roles part of being a researcher? Are similar skills or
activities required on a consistent basis? Is this part of our mandate,
or would we like it to be? If so, is there a way that geographers can
support one another (and future geographers) in these efforts? Could we
seek – prior to or during research – to augment these skills? If not,
should we be sharing more widely experiences of the pitfalls? Papers or
other contributions are invited on any of these or other topics falling
within the general theme.
Issues of interest may include, but are not restricted to:
- experiences questioning the role and mandate of research and
researcher
- pitfalls, successes, or other remarks on [political] involvement with
the research
- restrictions on or challenges to research and other involvement
- activism and academia
- the academic discipline of Geography, and geographers
- training, education, and career development of geographers (and
researchers in general)
- historical perspectives on "giving back" and/or the role of the
researcher
- research methodology
- positionality
- the definitions and boundaries of fieldwork, community work, and
personal development
- participation and participatory geographies
