Hello Geoffrey, glad to see you on the list.
I am an avid reader of Persian and Arabic poetry, though I don't translate
from it because my knowledge of Arabic relies heavily on grammar books to
get through, & I don't feel confident about getting the cultural contexts at
all "right" either, and I don't write lyric poetry anyway - so that's fairly
comprehensive a block!
Are you translating the Divan of Hafez entire? Can you say more about your
interest in these poetries? What is the modern Persian poetry you have
translated?
I did, however, write a short introduction to the pre-Islamic Arabic ode -
http://intercapillaryspace.blogspot.com/2006/05/nomad-odes-ostrich-eggs-nearly-split.html
- in which I did dare to translate four lines from Al-A'sha because I wasn't
satisfied with the translations I could find.
Pierre Joris' A Nomad Poetics contains a discussion of these odes and a v.
interesting translation from Al Khirniq.
Best,
Edmund
