Metronomic Irregularity: Natural Computation in New Guises
Room D 703
Clement House
LSE
'Metronomic Irregularity' is the title of an artwork made by the German-American sculptor Eva Hesse. The title is an oxymoron, a juxtaposition of contradictory terms. I use an image of the sculpture and the idea of a fruitful interaction between opposites to illustrate a theoretical perspective on the study of culture and cognition which treats them as separate sources of structure but emphasizes the interactions between them. The perspective is based on the 'metronomic' discipline of mathematical logic and the 'irregular' discipline of evolutionary theory and combines them to provide a way of thinking about the scope and limitations of the human sciences.
