Subject: Next meeting of RSS Official Statistics Section - 13 February -
Statistics on sexual identity
Dear all
The next meeting of the RSS Official Statistics Section will be held on 13
February 2008 at the RSS headquarters, 12 Errol Street, London, EC1
(nearest Tube: Moorgate or Barbican) at 5.00pm (tea from 4.30pm).
STATISTICS ON SEXUAL IDENTITY
Speakers: Joe Traynor and Amanda Wilmot (Office for National Statistics),
with discussant.
The ONS Sexual Identity Project was established in 2006 to meet user
requirements for statistics on sexual identity. The project has three main
objectives. First, to develop a question (or set of questions) to measure
self-perceived sexual identity that can be used on social surveys and for
equality monitoring purposes. Second, to test (both quantitatively and
qualitatively) the questions to ensure that are acceptable to survey
respondents and provide information of reasonable quality/accuracy and,
where possible, meet user requirements. Third, to provide guidance to users
of statistics, as well as those organisations collecting data on, sexual
orientation. If acceptable questioning can be developed, it is intended to
implement it on the ONS Integrated Household Survey (IHS).
Two speakers from ONS will give a presentation considering the
methodological aspects of question development and findings thus far. The
meeting will then invite a discussant to comment on the work undertaken,
followed by an open discussion on the methodology adopted and emerging
findings.

Ross Young
