Public Agencies, Trust and the Role of Social Research
In recent years public agencies have been encouraged to conduct social
research and be more responsive to the communities they service. A key part
of this has been the requirement for public agencies such as local
authorities and health bodies to measure public perceptions of satisfaction
and trust. The SRA Summer Event will explore the value of measuring
satisfaction and trust in public agencies and the implications for social
research.
The event will explore issues such as whether the search for an evidence
base to policy has been only politically driven or can social research
claim some impact on improvements to service delivery? Do the concepts of
public satisfaction and trust help public agencies deliver better services?
Are centrally driven prescribed approaches to the measurement of these
concepts appropriate? Are there ethical issues for social researchers to
consider when addressing these issues? Have some public agencies and
researchers been innovative in measuring satisfaction and trust and using
it to inform policy making?
