School of Applied Social Sciences
PhD Research Studentships
(closing date: 19 February, 2007)
The School of Applied Social Sciences at Durham University invites
applications from prospective PhD students for five fully funded
Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) studentships from October
2007. Two studentships are available for Sociology (including
Criminology and Sociology of Sport) and three for Social Work (including
Community and Youth Work), open to UK and EU students. We also invite
applications for fully funded Durham Doctoral Fellowships (open to
students from UK and overseas) and Overseas Research Students Awards
(overseas fees only) in any area of the School’s expertise; and a
studentship (UK fees only) in Community and Youth Work.
ESRC studentships
+3 studentships are for those who have already completed recognised ESRC
research training at Masters level; 1+3 studentships are for those
without a recognised research Masters degree. The 1+3 award is for a
four-year programme, including a one-year MA in Social Research. During
this year, students develop a PhD proposal, which is then completed
during the subsequent three years. These awards include maintenance
grants and tuition fees paid for UK students. For EU students the awards
cover tuition fees only. Maintenance grants are currently £12,300 per
year (2006-7 rate), and do not attract income tax or National Insurance.
Research students have the opportunity to undertake some paid seminar
teaching. Potential applicants should consult the ESRC website:
http://www.esrcsocietytoday.ac.uk/ESRCInfoCentre/opportunities/postgraduate/
for further information on postgraduate training. In your application,
you must include a research proposal that matches the ESRC research areas.

University-wide, and is open to applicants interested in studying in the
