Subject: Re: Transcription software
Hi Peter,
the dragon version you mentioned is only for a two person situation, needs a extremly fast computer and is very expencive (The results are a bit frustrating).
>>The version is Dragon v 9.0 SP1 Professional with an add-on called UNIVOICE. It's only available for American English and the results are unverified (the add-on was only released about six weeks ago). Needs anIntel Dual Core processor and 2 Gb of RAM for preference + large (60 Gb plus) and v fast hard drive(s)
Automatic voice recognition for more then one person is nearly impossible right now.
>>Agreed
But there is an interesting possiblity with dragon naturally speaking 9: A researcher hear his own interview and speak it into a mic. But is this faster then transcribing the "normal" way,
>>For me, yes. I can transcribe and edit three hours of multi-person conversations in about eight hours.
is it more comfortable,
>>Yes: given I use NS 9 because I have RSI it's the only way I can work, however....
does normal transcription rules fit for that way?
>> don't know
Several different opinions are mentioned in the mailing lists and boards. But we were very interested in a good answers on this topic. So we just have started a small research 4 weeks ago in which we focus on two solutions for transcribing. We compare 25 persons in transcribing the same material:
1. hand transcribing in Word by using the software f4 and a footswitch 2. by using dragon naturally 9 (hear the interview and speak it into a mic).
>I'll be interested to see how it goes. I transcribe from an Olympus DS3000 using Olympus DSS Pro player software which I control from the keyboard. I find this works well and I'm now looking for a better (external) omnidirectional microphone.
I think that we have the first results in jan07 and will publish it on audiotranscription.de . We try to find out, which is a comfortable and fast solution which fits to the needs of researchers (transcription roules, nonverbal communication etc.).
Best regards
Thorsten
