Governance Research Fellow (Ref: 171)
Full Time (35 hours per week)
The IDS is a leading global institution for research, teaching and communications on international development, based at the University of Sussex.
The IDS Governance Team is looking for entry-level Research Fellows who can conduct innovative, policy-oriented research on the ways in which the societal provision of collective benefits can be made more effective at the local, national or international levels.
Our over-riding priority is for those who will do cutting-edge research on governance, broadly defined. Issues in which we are potentially interested include (but are not limited to): Politics and management of international negotiations and global governance on trade or climate change; The regulatory state, law and markets; The politics of identity and gender, ethnicity, language, or religion; Political representation and societal accountability; Parallel institutions and local governance; and Political and governance implications of Information and Communications Technology.
The successful candidate(s) might be grounded in international relations, comparative politics, comparative sociology or administration. We are seeking to build on our existing strengths in Africa and South Asia but applicants with field-work experience in China or a developing country in the former Soviet bloc also would be particularly welcome.
The primary duties of the Fellow(s) will be research, but they also will be expected to contribute to teaching in the IDS graduate program in Governance so experience of university level teaching would be desirable.
Applicants should have a commitment to research that seeks to make a positive difference in the lives of people who are poor. Applicants should be in possession of a relevant PhD no later than August 2007, have a record of excellent research, have prospects for a strong publication record, and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
Salary: Grade 7 (£28,767 - £38,068 per annum)
Closing Date: 22 January 2007 (11:00 UK Time)
Interview Date: 22 & 23 February 2007
