CALL FOR PAPERS, with REVISED DEADLINE, 17 Jan 2007, to allow more time to
prepare prospective contributions.
Individual paper or panel proposals are invited on any aspect of the
relationship between music and evolutionary thought.
The conference aims to
* foster interdisciplinary synergy between hitherto often separate
areas of
research
* create a forum for dialogue to enhance understanding of the
relationship
between evolutionary thought and the study of music
* show how music can be used to support and develop genetic and
evolutionary
theories
Papers and panels might focus on such issues as:
* acoustics and perception
* animal song
* archaeology and music
* brain areas involved in musical processing
* composing with evolutionary models
* evolution and changing methodologies in the study of indigenous musics
* functions, uses, advantages, adaptations and universal features of
music
and music-making
* impact of evolutionary thought on musicologists, composers and critics
* influence of Spencer and Darwin on musical and musicological thought
* language and music
* memetics
* origins of music
Discussions and paper presentations will be in English.
INDIVIDUAL PAPER LENGTH: 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes for questions
and
discussion
PANEL LENGTH: 1 hour comprising three (twenty-minute) or four (fifteen-
minute)
papers, followed by one half hour for questions and discussion
PUBLICATION: It is intended to publish a volume of selected essays emerging
from
the conference
ABSTRACT LENGTH: Individual papers: 250 words, including (1) the paper
title;
(2) the abstract; and (3) contact information (name, institution, email
address)
Panels: a single abstract of no more than 1000 words, including (1) the
panel
title; (2) a 150-word description of the conceptual framework of the panel
(3)
the number and titles of individual papers; (4) a 150-word abstract for each
paper; and (5) contact information for all panel participants (names,
institutions, email addresses)
DEADLINE FOR ABSTRACT: All proposals should be submitted by email no later
than
17 JANUARY 2007 to Bennett Zon ([log in to unmask]). The committee
will
make final decision on proposals by the end of January 2007, and
contributors
will be informed early in the new year. Further information will be posted
on
the conference website (www.dur.ac.uk/music.evolution/) and all relevant web
discussion lists.
