We don't have a problem with French as many of our students so both fFench
and Chinese -this is what we do.
Half our intake comes in year 6. They do language awareness. In year 7 we
have a full intake. They choose one European language -French ,German or
Spanish and then also either Latin or Chinese. If they opt for Chinese they
do this for two years and can then continue in year 9 or drop and take up
another language. At year 10 they can continue with Chinese to GCSE or
drop -I'm not sure what the options there are as we are only at year 9 now.
All students have to take their first European langauge to GCSE.
We only have two 35 minutes lessons in Chinese in years 7 and 8 and in year
9 four 35 minute lessons.
Hope this is helpful.

Subject: Mandarin and French in MFL department
Dear colleagues
My school have just introduced Mandarin this September to 2 year 7 groups
along side with French being taught to 4 other year 7s. The languages are
being taught in parallel so this means pupils can't study both.
I'm desperate to know what your school is like as to how French and
Mandarin can co-exist in harmony in terms of timetabling and organisation
of sets. Also did your year 7 choose to study Mandarin in year 6 or was it
being given? What are the parents' and French teachers' responses?
Your comments will be much appreciated!
