Hello,
fal-pygrid-20.lancs.ac.uk has as far as I can see become very broken.
The root partition become completely messed up by a rogue catalina log
file growing to epic proportions (4G in a partition with 2G of free
space), and just screwed everything (pardon my french, I admit to
being a tad grumpy about this). I've managed to repair the partition
so it's usable, but we've had a lot of data loss (enough so that the
machine can no longer boot on it's own, it needs a rescue disk). All
the other partitions seem to have survived this relatively unscathed.
So the machine's crippled but still salvagable in some ways. /var/ is
still okay, so presumably so is the most recent copy of the postgres
databases, although backing them up would be interesting seeings as
half the libraries needed to run the database dump don't seem to exist
anymore.
I've stuck us in downtime till the 27th, which is when I can next
easily get onto campus, if anyone has any ideas about how I should
proceed (like should I attempt some kind of novel install over just
the root partition or should I just salvage what I can and reinstall
it all, this time with a much larger root partition!
Hope you chaps have a great holiday period,
Matt
