RGS-IBG Geographies of Children, Youth and Families Working Group:
Workshop Series
The series of workshops are organised by the recently established GCYF
Working Group of the RGS, and have been prompted by the vibrancy of
geographies of children and young people.
The workshops are targeted principally at emerging researchers exploring
geographies of young people. Participants are invited who are graduate
researchers, early career academics, or more experienced researchers who
are considering, or have recently begun to, explore the lives and
experiences of young people.
The workshops are designed to provide informal and supportive forums for
the exchange of ideas and networking between emerging and established
researchers in the field of geographies of children and young people.
Call for Participants Workshop One: Friday 16 February 2006
Methodological issues in researching with young people
Guest speaker - Dr. Samantha Punch, University of Stirling
Researching with young people often engenders particular methodological
concerns and anxieties; many of which have broader resonance for a variety
of areas of interest. These methodological concerns might be particularly
pertinent to emerging researchers in the field, and can potentially form a
barrier to researching young people's geographies. The first workshop in
the series is therefore focused upon the theme of 'methodological issues in
researching with young people'.
The workshop will provide opportunities both for group discussion and
participants to present a short presentation in a supportive context.
Discussion will be focused upon methodological and ethical concerns, with
scope for participants to identify issues to explore via group discussions.
Presentations are particularly welcome that outline specific or general
methodological concerns.
The guest speaker, Dr Samantha Punch, is a leading figure within critical
geographies and social studies of young people. Among her notable
publications, Samantha Punch is co-editor of 'Young Rural Lives: Global
Perspectives on Rural Childhood and Youth', with Ruth Panelli and Elsbeth
Robson. Her presentation will provide some reflexive insights into
overcoming methodological anxieties of researching with young people.
Drawing upon her extensive experience of researching with young people in a
variety of geographical contexts, the presentation will offer practical
discussion of both issues and problems that can arise when researching with
young people, and some workable solutions.
