Paul
I've been involved in plenty of developments on gassing landfills - commercial and domestic.
Solutions differ but in general all contain both ventilation elements and barrier elements within the building structure, and many also involve various in-ground venting structures. Sensors linked to fans/pumps/alarms are fairly common now in commercial developments, but I wouldn't favour their use in private residential units.
On some residential developments permitted development rights have been curtailed, and limitations placed on the deeds, to prevent extensions, garages etc being built without proper consideration of the issues.
There's quite a bit of good guidance out there, including some NHBC guidance on homes on gas affected sites, and some new CIRIA guidance published only last month.
Let me know if you want any more info.

Subject: Development on closed landfill sites
Does anyone have, or has anyone dealt with developments built on gassing
closed landfill sites? What were the remedial techniques involved and what
was the engineering solution? If developments are in use/ have been in
place for some time, have there been any post-development issues of concern
or has the development worked well?
