We have a supermarket and retail complex on a quarry which was infilled
with domestic and inert waste between 1955 and 1979. (depth of fill
reported to be up to 40m)
The development has been in place for some time - supermarket came first
in early 1990s and the retail park in the late 1990s.
As far as I can remember the supermarket has gas membrane protection in
floor slab, in the car park are passive venting measures. Within the
building are gas sensors which communicate with pumping system. Pumping
system operates regularly throughout day and if triggered by gas
sensors. Also evacuation by alarm automatically triggered by higher
levels if detected indoors. Problems since introduction have not been
numerous in terms of the system working BUT knowledge about the
circumstances of the site and system and its operation are not well
known amongst staff and management at the supermarket. (ones who need to
know!)
The retail park came later has separate protection measures, pump house
and detectors within individual units. Also a different factoring
company looks after the system and responds to alerts. Again knowledge
of staff in individual units varies but more significantly that system
has had more evacuations due to false alarms with police/fire service
and us in attendance. Electronic faults in control cards and power cuts
have been to blame for incidents.
However the systems seem to be relatively high maintenance - not just
install and leave - so more suited to commercial developments.
Hope this is of interest,

Subject: Development on closed landfill sites
Does anyone have, or has anyone dealt with developments built on gassing
closed landfill sites? What were the remedial techniques involved and
what was the engineering solution? If developments are in use/ have been
in place for some time, have there been any post-development issues of
concern or has the development worked well?
