ASMI ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2007
CALL FOR PAPERS
'GIUSEPPE GARIBALDI, THE POLITICS OF RADICAL FAME'
To mark the bicentenary of the birth of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Association
for the Study of Modern Italy (ASMI) is dedicating its annual conference to
the theme of: 'Giuseppe Garibaldi: the politics of radical fame'. The
conference will seek to explore Garibaldi's political and cultural
relationship to 19th century international radicalism and will examine his
legacy to various political movements, both in Italy and further afield, in
the 20th century. Particular consideration will be given to the media
(literary, visual, oral and commercial) through which Garibaldi's image was
both manufactured and disseminated to a wide public, and to its use in the
construction of national memory and a more general political style.
The conference will be held in London on 23-24 November 2007 at the Italian
Cultural Institute.
Those wishing to contribute to the conference are asked submit a title, a
brief abstract (250-500 words) of their proposed paper, and a statement of
academic/professional affiliation by email to the conference organisers
(Lucy Riall: [log in to unmask] and Christopher Duggan
[log in to unmask]) by the end of January 2007. Papers are welcome
from a broad range of disciplinary perspectives (e.g. History, Politics, Art
History, Cultural Studies).
