It's the waiting that kills,
a Christmas hung with
cancer decorations -
leopard spotted lungs,
swollen mid-drifts,
ghosts hiding in the marrow
of hips and ribs.
The spine readies itself
as a final playing field while we
prepare for the months ahead
and tell ourselves that death
is just another Santa Claus.
