Yes, congratulations! It looks promising.
And one could add the Statewatch Newsletter, Boing Boing, The Register, and
German lead media such as the primetime TV news "Tagesschau", the newspaper
"Sueddeutsche Zeitung" etc. Given this success, one might suspect that this
document will become very important in shaping the academic and political
discussion in the near future.
Having said this, I think it is important to either clarify the geographical
scope of the "surveillance society" as described in the report or the
concept of "society". Both the report itself as well as the media coverage
remain rather vague about this. The chapter on CCTV only refers to the UK
and the scenarios are situated in London while the chapters on regulation
have a much wider scope.
As far as I know the report was commissioned by the British Information
Commissioner to be presented at the 28th International Data Protection and
Privacy Commissioners' Conference which might explain the hybridity of an
international or at least transatlantic team of authors starting with "We
live in a surveillance society."
German "Tagesschau" reported - perhaps quoting from David´s presentation -
that the report concludes that Britain is the most surveilled nation
worldwide and that the SSN gives good marks to Germany. Puh, thanks for
this.
However, I would be glad if the authors could make the Information
Commissioner´s and/or their agenda and audience a bit more explicit. Many
thanks in advance.
Best wishes, Eric

dear list
I do not know if David or others kept track of their journalistic success...
but I found quite a few reports in newspapers and on websites that mentioned
the surveillance studies network... and linked a couple of them on my
(German) blog for surveillance studies.. anyways...two articles I found were
among others in the National Post in Canada and the Le Monde from France -
both over half a page long.. with the usual pictures of monitors and
cameras.. .... congratulations for the team and their work....
best
