Harmonisation of UK health statistics - what, how, and above all, why?
Myer Glickman (ONS)

Deriving perinatal statistics for the UK as part of a European project
Alison Macfarlane (City University)

In both health and education there are many differences in coverage,
time periods, classifications, coding practices, definitions, and other
issues, between the statistics produced by each UK country. These
problems become even greater when comparison is required with the
European or wider international community.
ONS and the UK government departments are committed to some degree of
harmonisation in the UKHS project. But what should be harmonised and
what should not, given the differing policy issues and health service
structures across the UK and beyond? The first three speakers address
these issues from DfES and ONS perspectives.

Alison Macfarlane will talk about the PERISTAT project which is part of
the European Health Monitoring Programme. The group designed a set of
indicators to try to compare aspects of pregnancy and its outcome in the
member states of the European Union. Compiling indicators for the UK as
a whole for the first project was challenging. Examples will be given of
the approaches taken and advances made in the second project
Europeristat-II in which statistical organisations from the four UK
countries are more actively involved.

All welcome. There is no registration fee but pre-registration is
recommended. You
