Mines in the Forest are operated under the system of "gales" whereby consent
is required to work an area of the forest and an application is made to the
the Deputy Gavellor. The last time I spoke with him there were a surprising
number of active Gales albeit that some of these are not at present actually
being worked. To add confusion the names used for the site being worked is
often different to that expected - could be the gale name, access point
name, face/location etc i.e. Hopewell isn't working the Hopewell bit but
somewhere connected.

David

Subject: [MINING-HISTORY] Forest of Dean Freemines
We have been d
I wonder if anyone can help me on the following please.
We have been down to the Forest of Dean this weekend, photographing old
mining sites, and came across two working freemines, Monument Colliery in
Bixslade, and Cannop Drift mine in Wimberry Slade. Both mines were actually
being worked.
In addition to these, Hopewell Colliery is a working mine during the winter,
and I believe that Phoenix mine works at times.
Does anyone have a definitive list of the mines still working? I thought
that there were only 2 in the whole Forest. Would be grateful for some help.
Many thanks
