The Foundation for the Sociology of Health & Illness, the charity which owns
the journal ‘Sociology of Health & Illness’, is seeking applications for
funding for:
* Workshops/symposia on medical sociological topics
* Part-funding of PhDs on medical sociological topics
* Research initiation Grants for medical sociological research
Applicants can apply for up to £2,000 for expenses such as speakers’ travel
relating to workshops.
The Foundation will once again make £32,000 available over 4 years to
university departments to part-fund 1+3 PhD studentships.
The Foundation’s Research Initiation Grants are being introduced for the
first time. They are designed to fund development work by groups of
individuals to submit a future research application. Examples of such
development work could include: travel (including overseas travel) and
overnight accommodation of potential applicants to a central location for a
planning meeting; payment of a research associate for a literature search
and survey; pre-pilot work; and travel to possible sample recruitment sites.
Bids are invited up to a maximum of £5,000.
Further details and application forms for the workshops, PhDs and research
initiation grants are all available from the Foundation’s website:

Yours sincerely,
Mick Bloor
(chair of trustees)
