medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Darren,
A point of clarification: you asked about "communally-imposed penalties" and
cited Henry Phip, a Bucks Lollard as an example. But this penalty was
imposed by the bishop of Lincoln, not by "the community." Do you mean
instead something like a penalty or penance that was to be served in a
public way (in which case many penances meted out to accused Lollards would
fit, as they involved penitential processions), or in some way "benefiting"
the community?
Best, Shannon
