Extending The Boundaries: New Research in Sociology
Postgraduate Conference - Free Attendance
Friday 27th April 2007 9.30am - 6.00pm.
School of Social Sciences, City University, Whiskin Street, London EC1V 0HB
In the contemporary world 'boundaries' have become an increasingly important
and often contested issue. Migration and new media technologies challenge
notions of territorially bounded social and cultural identities. New working
practices such as working from home are increasingly blurring the boundaries
between the public location of the office and the private location of the
home. Additionally within sociology, social theorists such as Giddens are
increasingly transcending disciplinary boundaries. But where, why and how
are boundaries still enforced and maintained? And what is the resulting
impact on the quality of our social existence and/or sociology as an
academic discipline?
The aim of the conference is to explore the concept of 'boundaries' in
different substantive sociological areas, but also in terms of
interdisciplinary and methodological divisions in order to create
opportunities for developing new and diverse perspectives on dealing with
issues relating to the concept of 'boundaries' in different contexts.
Research students at any stage in their doctoral research are invited to
submit papers exploring the issue of ?boundaries?. Papers can be
methodological, theoretical and /or substantive and submissions from all
sociology related disciplines are welcomed.
The conference provides an opportunity for research students to present and
discuss their work in a friendly and supportive environment and registration
is free to all research students.
This is a free conference, however we cannot offer any assiatnce with travel
nor accomodation.
