Dear All,
Based in Preston I agree. A return standard train fare midweek from
Preston to London is now £200. Another twist is that the West Coast Main
Line is under continuous reconstruction with diversions and lengthy
delays. London is just miles away from anywhere and at the wrong end of
the country - practically in Luxemburg. No one goes there any more.

Dear All,
I really am unhappy that this conference is taking place on a Friday.
Living in Stoke it is hideously expensive to attend on Fridays because
of the cost of the train fare. I've just looked at the Network Rail Web
site and note that the cheapest return ticket that would get me there in
reasonable time to attend the conference is £168.00! This compares with
only £27.00 on Saturdays.
I would also add that many of us in the new universities have heavy
teaching loads and other responsibilities which make it very difficult
for us to get away from our institutions on weekdays.
Please in future years revert to Saturdays, or if it must be a weekday
consider a conference in say Birmingham or Manchester.

Subject: Conference: Digital Deluge: History in the 21st Century, IHR,
17 November 2006
Dear All,
Registrations can now be made for the 2006 AHC-UK conference 'Digital
Deluge: History in the 21st Century' on 17 Nov at the IHR, London.
Organised by the AHC-UK and AHDS - History this conference explores the
challenges facing historians from the increasing volume of electronic
and
digital sources. These sources can often be incomplete, difficult to
acce ss
and to preserve, but they also provide new opportunities for research,
teaching and collaboration. Five experts in their field will provide
perspectives from archiving, scholarship, research, teaching and
e-scienc e.
Together, these perspectives may enable historians to harness the
digital
deluge rather than be swamped by it. The format of the conference will
al low
presenters to cover issues in depth and provide participants ample time
f or
discussion.
