As a reference librarian, I can say with some authority that if we stayed for our last customers, we would be lucky to get home by dawn. There is only so long a customer can stay in a bank while finishing a transaction, the only thing that would force some customers to leave a library is starvation (and with the rise of vending machines, even that might not be an issue)

Oh, dear! I seem to have started something unintended - I was merely making
a small comment.
In fact, the incident occurred within opening hours and the staff were not
inconvenienced at all. Just heavy-handed and showing poor customer service.
Incidentally, my local supermarket allows customers to browse for up to 20
minutes after their 10pm closing time and my bank keeps counters open until
the queue has been dealt with: when there was once a problem, I used the
argument that libraries stay open for their last cusomers, why can't banks?
