Colleagues,
I would be grateful if you would bring the PhD studentship below, in German
in the Humanities Research Institute at the University of Ulster, to the
attention of any recent graduates who may be interested. It is open to
anyone normally resident in the UK and is full-time, with an annual stipend
of 12,300 pounds plus fees. Prospective candidates should contact me.
Because the studentship is set to begin in January 2007, the closing date is
rather tight: Friday week, Dec 8th.
Further information may be found at www.ulster.ac.uk/researchstudy

Pól.
PhD Area:
"Austrian Jewish writing from the end of Monarchy to the Anschluss."
Fin-de-sičcle Austria was the stomping ground both of vicious anti-Semites,
including the mayor of Vienna, Karl Lueger, and of a number of prominent
Jewish writers who made a massive contribution to German literature. After
the end of Empire in 1918 many of these writers considered German Austria a
claustrophobic, culturally narrow place compared to the multicultural Empire
that had preceded it. Some of them stayed in Austria, but others emigrated.
This project will look at the choices made by one or more Austrian writers
of Jewish descent in the period 1918-1938, how these choices are reflected
in their writing, and examine the connection between their Jewishness and
their decision to stay or leave.
