Mapping the Underworld
The Institute of Engineering Surveying and Space Geodesy (IESSG) at the
University of Nottingham is Europe's leading academic research institute
in the field of satellite navigation, positioning and tracking
technology. The Institute now has a vacancy for a Postdoctoral Research
Fellow to join the vibrant and growing research team.
The IESSG was recently awarded a research contract by the Department of
Trade and Industry, as part of a collaborative project managed by UK Water
Industry Research ltd (UKWIR), to develop an innovative ubiquitous
positioning system, using GPS, GNSS, INS, Locatalites and total station
technology. In addition, the use of Augmented Reality will be used as a
visualizing tool. The successful candidate will work on the development
of novel positioning concepts for use with this project. The overall
objective is to develop techniques to position buried pipes and cables in
built up areas.
Candidates should be qualified to PhD level or equivalent. You will need
the ability to develop data processing software to rapidly test concepts
and algorithms, and to integrate software and hardware. Some experience
with satellite navigation technology and/or engineering surveying is also
highly desirable. The successful candidate will be expected to
collaborate as part of a team, and should have good interpersonal skills.
Salary will be within the range £24,161 – £30,606 per annum, depending on
qualifications and experience (salary can progress to £34,448 per annum,
subject to performance). This post will be offered on a fixed-term
contract for a period of one year.
