The Centre for Qualitative Research, Bournemouth
University presents a new Masterclasses for 2007:
18th & 19th January 2007
"The Ambit of Biographical Research"
conducted by
Professor Robert Miller, School of Sociology & Social
Policy, Queen's University, Belfast, Northern Ireland
Recent years has seen an upswing in interest among
qualitative researchers in biographical or
autobiographical information. While this 'phenomenon'
arose spontaneously and simultaneously in a largely
unconnected manner across a variety of disciplines, it
has now converged into what sometimes is called 'the
biographical turn' in the social sciences. Approaches
to working with (auto)biographical material range from
the quite 'data-driven', taking on a realist or
grounded theory perspective, to the reflexive,
emphasising interpretation and the join of the
perspectives of the narrator and the hearer.
The workshop will include exercises involving the
personal construction of a realist familial context
that will be set against a reflexive interpretation.
This will be an adaption of a biographical technique
of analysis that attempts to develop a dynamic tension
between 'realist life history data' and 'reflexive
life story narrative'. Participants will need to be
prepared to share aspects of their personal lives with
the other members of the class.
