The comment that I made was in no way a criticism of your post, just an
observation that I made in looking at Google News. When an academic
focus, discipline or field is new, it takes time and a wider awareness of
such a new area or such fields to get academic attention beyond its
borders. Actually your post was very interesting and got me looking into
search engines and databases before five o'clock in the morning, quite a
positive achievement considering I had my own list of things I planned to
do in that time slot.
It is interesting to note that Access News has 57 news stories that
mention the phrase dark tourism, Factiva cites 91 articles resulting from
a search of the phrase dark tourism, Lexis Nexis in Major Papers finds 25
citations using this phrase. I do apologize for any sense I gave of
minimizing the content of your post, I was simply observing that compared
to areas of study that had been around for a substantial time, the size of
the coverage in general media is still limited, but is showing substantial
growth as awareness of this research specialty filters into the world's of
information gatekeepers and the reading public at large. I further fully
agree with your observation that quantity aside there is a growing body of
citations with quality or significant coverage of matters related to or
involving dark tourism. Indeed, in the Net-Gold group that I moderate, I
have no less than 15 posts that mention this field by phrase.
Another important matter in this regard to keep in mind is that the
terminology is new and not the behaviors. The new terminology tends to
aggregate and extend awareness of behaviors that have existed for a very
long time without drawing the research attention of a specific field
devoted to the study of these behaviors, so that other groups of
terminology need to be found to uncover dark tourism activities that exist
and existed without the application of this phrase to describe these
activities and events. Also the literature will tend to be split amongst
other concepts as some may talk in terms of holocaust tourism or cemetary
tourism or battlefield tourism and not use in their articles or books the
phrase dark tourism. This multiplicity of terminology may serve to
further dilute knowledge of the actual size of the literature that can be
correctly classified as dark tourism related.

So to summarize, many thanks for getting me started on this topic, it is
most interesting to see the way in which a young field of interest starts
to difuse in the sources that carry discussion of the field and under what
nomenclature.
