Hi all
At Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery we are about to start working on a new
project called 'Rethinking Disability Representation' which is being run by
the University of Leicester Museum Studies Research Centre, and is
involving 9 partnership museums. Our involvement is going to be based
around 'first person' interpretation of disability-related objects on
display - e.g. in the form of audio guides, audio visual, artists responses
to objects/art works. We are just working up our project plan and are still
exploring a number of possibilities as to the best way forward. We would
really like to hear from people on the list if they have advice on any of
the following (sorry about the long list!):
1) If you have worked with, and/or could recommend any audio describers (I
have already made contacts with a few people listed on the RNIB website).
We are looking for people who could audio describe art works for an audio
guide.
2) If you know of any audio guides (and supplying companies) that are
particularly suited to blind/visually impaired users e.g. raised numbers on
buttons etc.
3) If you can recommend any freelance poets (especially with experience of
working with community groups) - in the Midlands area if possible.
4) If you know of any/have worked with any storytellers/illustrators to
create a book related to your museum collections or similar.
5) If you know of/have worked with any animators to create an audio visual
for a gallery/exhibition.
Any advice you can offer in these areas would be much appreciated.
Best wishes
Liz
