Jean,
Just for clarification, I don't think the proposal was to make THIS list
closed. I firmly believe this should be an open list. The proposal was to
establish a closed online forum for those working in local or central
government, to complement this list. The closed list would be for issues
very specific to the government sector that are deemed to be of no general
interest and/or issues of confidentiality/sensitivity that might not be
appropriate to discuss openly in a public forum.
The proposal is not new to RM. I'm aware of several industry-specific
newsgroups/online forums where the content is not appropriate for general
broadcasting. In fact, I'm a member of a pharmaceutical RM group myself. If
that list was opened up, it would have no postings!
Kind regards
Eldin.

I'm with those who don't favour a closed list. Mainly because I subscribe to
the FOI list, and the HE people very kindly let us use it. Records
Management list should be about records management issues, and there are few
of us around to make the list closed to outsiders.
Anyway, in order to reduce the amount of mail coming in to our local
government server, which is of interest to me alone, I subscribe via my
personal email address. If you close the list I'd have to subscribe via my
work address and have to handle large quantities of mail which I would
normally delete after reading anyway.
Isn't records management about selection?

Jean Johnson
