OCTOBER RAS MEETINGS - FRIDAY OCTOBER 13
October's Specialist Discussion Meetings are:
"The Future of Computational and Theoretical Astrophysics in the UK"
"Solar-Terrestrial Magnetic Fields & Reconnection "
in the lecture theatres of the Geological Society and the Society of
Antiquaries (both in Burlington House, Piccadilly), respectively, from
10:30-15:30. Full details at
http://www.ras.org.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=227#oct
The subsequent A&G meeting is open to all, and features an exceptionally
diverse set of topics:
Dr Phil Livermore (Leeds; 2006 RAS Blackwell Prizewinner) -
Magnetic stability analysis for the geodynamo
Charles Barclay -
The Barclay Equatorial;
education and outreach with an 1860 Cooke 10" refractor
Dr Simon Jeffery (Armagh) -
Pulsations in subluminous B stars: a question of opacity
Prof David Southwood (ESA) -
Saturn's magnetic rotation: an update and an explanation
(Geological Society Lecture Theatre, 16:00-18:00)

BURLINGTON HOUSE UPDATE
From November 2006 the RAS's Burlington House apartments will be closed
for approximately 12 months. This is to allow major works that will make
this historic, listed building fit for the Society's purposes and of
greater benefit for members (including installation of a fully-equipped
lecture room with seating for about 100), as well as to improve access for
the disabled.
During this time the following arrangements will apply:
- The RAS office and library will move to Hallam Court, 77 Hallam,
Street, London W1N 6BR. N.B: post (which will be redirected)
should continue to be sent to Burlington House. Telephone, fax
and email addresses will be unchanged.
- Regular Friday Meetings will be held as usual, in the Geological Society
and Society of Antiquaries. (Only one Specialist Discussion
meeting will be held in each of February and March because of works
elsewhere in Burlington House.)
- Most of the book stock will be in storage; library services
will therefore be severely restricted.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
RAS HISTORY
The impending temporary move from Burlington House has placed a premium on
storage space. In the light of this, and subject to availability, copies
of either or both volumes of the "History of the RAS" will be provided
free of charge to any RAS Fellow who provides a self-addressed jiffy bag
stamped to the value of £2.55 (for either of volume 1 [1820-1920] or
volume 2 [1920-1980]), or £5.43 (for both volumes) before October 20.
Copies will also be available at the October A&G meeting.
These volumes make for perhaps surprisingly good reading with their
unexpected candour, in recording the debates of almost two centuries, and
the characters involved. Non-Fellows can buy copies from the RAS

RAS NAM 2007
It's never too early to note the dates of the UK's premier gathering of
professional astronomers in your diary. The 2007 RAS National Astronomy
Meeting will be held at the University of Central Lancashire, 2007 Apr
16-20 inclusive, and will incorporate parallel meetings of the MIST and UK
Solar Physics Groups,
