Planting a Rose
ought not to be dangerous,
not in one's own front garden,
but there she was on the bank
where I'd dug the hole,
toppling off and twisting
one of those small feet
she often complains about
for being so small,
hobbling then to the physio
who ordered x-rays
(reassuring) and gave
strong massage and advice.
Here are the two x-ray plates
boldly marked L for left,
larger than life
and like delicate artworks.
The big pain and bruising
are private to her -
if only she wouldn't hobble so
and insist on going to work.
Spring in the air
and in our step
got us to buy the rose.
It's in and budding.
Now to get the spring
back into HER step...
