THE BIG COMBO
[via Joseph H. Lewis]
Bar open. Gambling outside city limits.
If I can get hold of her & make her talk . . .
Girls will come tumbling after . . .
Could get me a nice rich hoodlum.
Once it gets started, it’s hard to stop
my sworn duty to push too hard.
Blind & twisting maze, & all the little paths lead back
out—-let’s never come back.

Written during my first viewing of this beautifully-restored
film noir, helmed by one of the best B-movie directors, but
apparently somewhat overlooked at the time of its release in
1955, a bit after the genre had peaked. I chose a multi-voiced
strategy, though after learning that the persistent police
investigator and the gangster’s mistress were husband & wife
in real life, I might limit myself to their lines whenever I’m
able to see this film again.
