List members,
In regards to Dr. Bacci's conference announcement,
I am pleased to know that such a conference that values the
senses in relation to the arts is happening. I'm sorry to see that
kinesthesia/haptic as senses are missing, as the art forms of
dance and architecture will not be adequately represented at
the conference.
The "arts" are often defined as a general term which refers to the
"visual"
arts, while dance is left out. If we turn to the history of aesthetic
categorization, beginning
in the 17th century (according to both German and English aesthetics
texts), we
see that dance often falls between the cracks of categories termed
"spatial" (painting
and sculpture) and "temporal" (most often, poetry and music). As
Herder himself
has been cited as saying, "I meant to include dance, but just didn't
have the time..."
Issues of being a body unreflectively rather than reflecting on the
Being of a body is often the culprit,
but surely we have come further since then. Architecture is similar
story, somewhat
related, as the buildings we occupy are often taken for granted and the
haptic sense (of
sensing space, which includes audition and kinesthesia and may be a
form of synesthesia) is covered
over by especially the visual. Certainly, there is much to say around
the politics of visuality, especially
within the problematics of print text cultures that value the
objectification of experience (see Jonathan Crary, et al).
I welcome dialogue around these and related subjects.
