During the First World War, specially selected German prisoners of war
were utilized in the Iron Mines of the Island of Raasay, located near
the Isle of Skye in Scotland. It seems that these particular POW's were
selected on the basis of the own special skills in mineworking. The
total number of POW-miners was 280 and they stayed until 1919.
