Dear Gill,
I am pleased you found the info. useful. I was going to send it off List,
but I thought it might possibly be useful to others so 'put it on record'.
Lillian and Keiths's info. re the Poor Law situation (and convict use), in
Scotland is v.interesting (thankyou to both). I had simply remembered a posting
by someone a while ago, and, as I do when reading 'things', just keep an eye
open - indeed, whenever I read anything for personal info./pleasure, it
seems I am doing it for at least half a dozen things at the same time! - can
make reading the MJ quite hard work sometimes!
I will keep looking for refs. re convicts in mines, and if anything more is
found will place it on the List. Don't forget Lewis's "Lead Mining in Wales"
has a para. on 'use' of convicts - might have a spare copy of this vol.
somewhere if of interest and you don't have a copy... let me know if you might like
me to look (off-List of course please).
When you head up the Artists Valley beyond Tyn-y-garth (about .5 of a mile),
keep glancing to the right and you will see the trial level I mentioned
before. Nothing spectacular, but worth a look all the same.
Regards, Bernard
p.s. I noticed a couple of dreadful typos in my Post... spell checks are one
thing... re-reading another!!! I did write it in a bit of a hurry, so this
is the best excuse I can offer!
