Sociology of Health and Illness
Book Reviews Editor
The Editorial Board of Sociology of Health and Illness, on behalf of the
Foundation for the Sociology of Health and Illness, are seeking to appoint
a Book Reviews Editor to take up a three-year term of office from 1st
September 2007.
The Book Reviews Editor is a member of the Editorial board of Sociology of
Health and Illness, and he or she works in close collaboration with the
other journal editors. The current editorial team consists of Pascale
Allotey, Daniel Reidpath and Clive Seale (based at Brunel University),
Steven Wainwright and Clare Williams (based at Kings College London) and
Jon Gabe (based at Royal Holloway). The aim of the post is to alert
readers to newly published book material that may of interest to them as
active researchers or as teachers of medical sociology. To that end, the
main duties are:
• To ensure that all major publications in the field of the
sociology of health and illness are received in the Editor’s office and
listed accordingly in the journal. Listings are made twice a year.
• To ensure that all the important publications are reviewed by
experts in the field. Reviews are normally requested to be no longer than
750 words. Ideally books should be reviewed quickly.
• To forward all completed and published reviews to publishers.
• To attend, and present a written report at, the Editorial Board
meetings (two per year).
• To commission ad hoc review articles from experts in the field,
for instance when there are a number of publications on a specific topic.
These commissions should be agreed between editors and members of the
editorial board.
An honorarium (agreed by the Foundation for the Sociology of Health and
Illness) is payable for the above duties. This is currently £500.
Book review copy is required six times per year. Copy usually needs to be
edited in a form that is acceptable to the copy editor (i.e. double
spaced). The copy editor serves as an intermediary between the Book
Reviews Editor and the publisher, and close co-operation between all these
parties in necessary. Completing these tasks takes about one half day
per week. Good reliable secretarial help is essential, and reasonable
office costs are reimbursed.
Applicants should be aware that writing book reviews is rarely regarded as
an academic priority, and identifying and chasing up reviewers can be time
consuming.
Candidates for the post should have a track record of writing book reviews
themselves, some previous editorial experience, involvement with the BSA
medical sociology community and ideally also experience of working with
academic journals and an international network of academic and health
related contacts.
The post can be jointly held, in which case the honorarium and duties are
shared as agreed by the post holders, and the appointment is made to both
named Book Reviews Editors. At the end of one three-year term of office,
the Editorial Board can invite the Editor or Editors to continue for one
further three-year term of office, should the Editor (or both Editors, in
the case of a joint appointment) wish to continue. In the case of joint
appointments, if one Editor leaves or resigns, the Board can in
exceptional cases co-opt a joint Book Reviews Editor for the remainder of
the remaining Editor’s term. However, at the end of that term the
Editorial Board will open up the post to other applicants as well.
Applications
Applications should be sent to Rob Flynn (address below) by 5 January
2007. These should include the applicant(s) CV, any further information
that would help the search committee judge the applicant’s ability to
carry out the duties outlined above and some indication of support from
the applicant’s institution. A recommendation for appointment will be
made by the Search Committee to the Editorial Board at its Easter meeting.
