Then consider training in public health in the north east of England,
the region with the highest levels of socio-economic deprivation:

NORTHERN DEANERY Postgraduate Institute for Medicine and Dentistry

Multidisciplinary Public Health Training Programme

SPECIALIST REGISTRARS, SPECIALIST TRAINEES and HONORARY LECTURERS in
PUBLIC HEALTH

Reference: 06/930/001

Applications are invited for a range of posts in this programme in the
Northern Deanery (North East of England). The main training programme is
based on specialist training posts: Specialist Registrar posts for those
medically qualified and specialist trainee posts for those with a non
medical background. This specialty plays a crucial role in ensuring
effective population health improvement by assessing the health needs of
the population, evaluating the impact of health and health care
interventions and influencing change. The Northern Deanery offers
excellent training opportunities and has a successful track record in
training in the specialty. The Health Protection Agency also offers the
opportunity to undertake an extended period of Specialist training for
those interested in a career in health protection.

MBBS or equivalent qualification is essential for applying for a
Specialist Registrar post. Successful candidates must be registered with
the GMC or have evidence of being eligible for GMC registration.
Applicants for Specialist Registrar posts must have a minimum of 2 years
General Professional Training in a clinical specialty as a Senior House
Officer. Those successful at securing a Specialist Registrar position
will be appointed for 4 to 5 years.

Specialist trainee applicants should have a first degree or other
equivalent health care professional qualification and a minimum of 4
years relevant experience in the NHS, local authority, academic or
voluntary sector working or other Public Health related fields. A 6
month post as a general trainee to gain experience in Public Health is
also available to suitable applicants. Applicants will have a minimum of
2 years relevant experience in the health and health care sector.

Applicants wishing to pursue academic track public health training may
be appointed as either SpR or SpT and as an honorary lecturer in public
health at Newcastle University (Institute of Health & Society)
(www.ncl.ac.uk/ihs). Applicants wishing to pursue academic track
training may wish to discuss this further with Professor Martin White,
chair of public health (mailto:[log in to unmask]).

Specialist Registrars and Specialist Trainees will be offered a place on
the MSc Health Sciences course at Newcastle University
(http://www.ncl.ac.uk/ihs/postgrad/taught/healthsci/).

Further information on public health training can be obtained from the
Faculty of Public Health website at www.fph.org.uk.

Specific enquiries about the Northern deanery training programme should
be directed to Dr Ray Lowry, Training Programme Director, email
mailto:[log in to unmask]

The Postgraduate Dean confirms that these placements and/or programmes
have the required educational and deans approval. These jobs are
unlikely to attract a work permit. Applications from candidates who
require a work permit to work in the UK may not be considered if there
are a sufficient number of other suitable candidates. We now operate an
equal opportunities and a no smoking policy. All training programmes are
equally open to those who may, either from the outset or subsequently,
wish to train flexibly (if eligible), job share or slot share. Further
information can be obtained on the application form. The successful
applicants will be employed by the South Tyneside Healthcare NHS Trust
(Lead Employer Trust) All information regarding these vacancies
including the application form and job description may be obtained by
visiting our website www.pimd.co.uk (Link to the further particulars at:
http://mypimd.ncl.ac.uk/PIMD_new2/medstaff/content?page=220)

Please note that in light of changes to employment law and equal
opportunities we regularly update our application forms, therefore you
are advised to use the relevant application form for these posts only
and use the reference number quoted above. Fully completed application
forms (only electronic/electronically produced submissions will be
accepted) should be returned by October 27 2006 to the email address:
mailto:[log in to unmask] by 9.00am on the closing date.
