GISELA SHAW PRIZE 2007
The Gisela Shaw Prize is an annual essay prize for postgraduate students
working in the field of German studies instituted by the Association for
Modern German Studies in honour of Professor Gisela Shaw on her
retirement and in gratitude for her valuable contribution to the work of
the Association over many years.
1. The Association for Modern German Studies (AMGS) is offering a prize
for the best German research paper submitted to it by a postgraduate
student. It is intended that the prize be offered annually (but will
initially run for three years from 2005).
2. The winner will receive a £100 book token and, at the discretion of
the editors and provided the topic fits with the journal's area of
interest, the winning entry may be published in the on-line publication
GfL. At the discretion of the jury, two runners up may also be announced
(£50 each).
3. All inquiries relating to this competition are to be addressed to Dr
Carol Tully. The deadline for receipt of entries is 31 January 2007.
Entries must be submitted electronically to Dr Carol Tully
([log in to unmask]).
4. Entries are invited from all students registered for a Higher Degree
in the UK at the deadline, including students on PGCE courses in German.
(Evidence of status is required, e.g. written confirmation from
supervisor). The essay topic can emanate from any aspect of German
studies, including teaching methodology.
5. No previously published papers will be accepted. Entries that are
published elsewhere after submission and before the announcement of the
winner will also be disqualified.
6. Papers may be written in German or English and should not exceed 5000
words. The final version of the winning entry will need to conform to
the house style of GfL, if accepted for publication (www.gfl-journal.de).
7. The winner of the Gisela Shaw Prize will be selected by a jury which
will consist of AMGS members. The jury will be appointed annually by the
Convenor of the Association, and will normally consist of four members,
at least one of whom shall also be on the editorial board of GfL. The
composition of the jury will reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the
Association's activities and its intended bridging function between the
school and the further and higher educations sectors.
8. The winner will be selected by 1 March 2007 and will be notified as
soon as possible thereafter. The prize will be formally awarded at the
next AMGS conference. Attendance at the conference is a precondition for
being awarded the prize. The winner is not required to pay the
conference fee.
9. The judges' decision is final. The Association reserves the right to
withhold the prize if no papers of sufficient quality are submitted.
10. Re-submission of a redrafted paper is allowed for entry the
following year.
