Understanding environmental knowledge controversies: THE CASE OF FLOOD
RISK MANAGEMENT
The Project
Scientific activities that were once hidden in laboratories and journals
have become more open to public scrutiny through technologies like the
internet. This means that scientists, and those who use their work, have
to think again about how science should inform democratic
decision-making. The joint research councils' Rural Economy and Land Use
programme have recently funded a project to explore these issues in
relation to rural land management, with a particular emphasis on flood
risk. This project involves collaboration between social and natural
scientists based in the Universities of Oxford, Durham and Newcastle.
The project team includes: - Professor Sarah J Whatmore at the Oxford
University Centre for the Environment; Professor Stuart N Lane at the
Department of Geography, University of Durham; and Professor Neil Ward
at the Centre for Rural Economy, University of Newcastle. The project
will run for 3 years from January 2007 and will also involve up to three
doctoral students; a project administrator (based at Oxford) and a
fourth, part-time, post-doctoral researcher (based at Durham).
