Mental health is a complex arena, with diverse, changing and sometimes
competing ways of understanding and intervening. It has, for many years,
been a neglected area in society, professional practice and education.
Recently, the need for reform and modernisation has been recognised – with
an increased emphasis on the need for an understanding of mental wellbeing
as well as ill-health, and of recovery-based approaches. There is a need for
these changes to be both reflected and developed in Higher Education.
Recognising this, representatives of four of the Higher Education Academy
(then the Learning and Teaching Support Network) subject centres came
together in 2001. A seminar was arranged, held in York the following year,
for all with an interest in learning and teaching about mental health in
higher education.
In response to the considerable enthusiasm generated there, a bid was
submitted to the LTSN development fund for funding for the Mental Health in
Higher Education project. The Senior Project Development Officer, Jill
Anderson, began work on the project in January 2003. Lynn Tang joined mhhe
as Project Development Officer in July 2006.
Three years on, the project has evolved into a collaboration between the
Higher Education Academy (HEA) and the Centre of Excellence in
Interdisciplinary Mental Health at the University of Birmingham (CEIMH),
employing a full time project development officer and a senior project
development officer two days per week. A UK-wide project, mhhe also receives
funding from the Department of Health (section 64) for development of a
mental health educators network in England.
The Higher Education Academy aims to help institutions, discipline groups
and all staff to provide the best possible learning experience for their
students. mhhe is a partnership between its subject centres for:
