Lecturer in Heritage Studies
Faculty of Arts
£28,849 – £38,772, Ref: 2840
Based in Milton Keynes
Available from 1 January 2007
The Open University is developing a curriculum in Heritage Studies. We are
taking a wide view of the field, looking beyond the professional areas of
heritage management and conservation, to include speculation about
personal and public ‘memory’ and how different individuals and groups
react to artefacts or places defined as part of national or regional
Heritage. We are looking for a fresh approach to the teaching of the
subject. We are not primarily interested in debates about conservation or
restoration, although these are important issues. We hope to develop the
study of the reception of Heritage sites and artefacts and to encourage
students to engage with and critique the way ‘Heritage’ is managed in our
name.
In association with a project group, you will be working both on a
Heritage Studies course for first presentation in 2008 and on a
feasibility study to assess the possibilities of teaching in this field in
the future. If this study proves positive, you will be working on a
Heritage Studies programme of courses (see Section 3.2).
The planned course for 2008 will be a ‘short’ course (12 weeks’ part-time
work) taught online, with the support of part-time tutors. It will be
pitched at students new to The Open University system and will aim to
enthuse them with the possibilities of distance learning. It will also
attract students into the field of Heritage Studies.
We are looking for someone with wide experience of working with Heritage
sites or artefacts, preferably with research publications in the field.
The successful candidate will have demonstrable writing and communication
skills and show themselves able to work with online and multimedia
teaching techniques. Programming skills are not required, but we will be
looking for proven experience of work on multimedia and/or online
projects.
The successful candidate will be associated with one of the seven
departments in the Arts Faculty (Art History, Classical Studies, History
(incorporating History of Science, Technology and Medicine), Literature,
Music, Philosophy and Religious Studies). There will be possibilities of
teaching within this department and on the Faculty’s interdisciplinary
courses, although priority will be given to work on Heritage Studies.
