In the series of books "Deben Valley Place Names" published by the Suffolk Local History Council, a glossary explains Backhouse as a field immediately behind a farm-house. However, Smith's Elements under bæc-hus gives only the meaning 'bake-house'.
Do these distinct meanings both really exist? If so, what is the regional distribution?
