Hi Heather
You will need to convince your network manager that whatever you choose is secure. I have been trying for 3 years now and we are nearly there. They wouldn't let me have webdav because "there are issues of security". FTP is blocked on our network because "its not secure".
We have tried a couple of solutions and they have decided on Sonicwall, which is a hardware solution. However, a recent upgrade of software caused the link to the college network to divert to Russia! This method uses SSL and has a nice web interface. Rather than using it through the VLE my plan is for students to have one login for college network, email, vle and intranet and to be able to access them all through this web interface. That's my dream, the network manager has to be convinced yet!
The use of college software through a VPN could be tricky depending on licences.

Subject: [SPAM] - [VLES] Network Storage via a VLE from home - HOW - Email found in subject
Has anyone made their network storage (often referred to as home drives)
available to their learners when they are using a computer from home.
I'm sure I have seen it done somewhere. A link was put into their VLE and
it caused what looked like windows explorer to open so that a person could
just drag and drop files onto and off of their college network space.
We are keen to get this type of scenario working and wondered how other
people had done it and what pitfalls await us.
Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
Thanks
Heather
